I see from the Samsung web page that we will soon (hopefully using the UK link) be able to upgrade South African i600 phones to WM6. Does anyone know anything about this?

Samsung i600 WM6 upgrade (http://www.samsungmobile.com/promotion/i600/index.jsp)

Have the local networks tested these phones with WM6?

Hello

Did you upgrade?

If so, which country did you choose to download from and what is your impression of win 6?

Thanks

Sorry I haven't managed to upgrade yet. I'm waiting for the UK site to become available. I think that will probably be the right site for my version of the i600.

I'm having some problems with my i600 connecting to the Linksys 802.11b wifi router at home. The connection is established, but I cannot seem to get the traffic to work through the wifi connection. So when I connect to my wifi router and then try to browse www.google.com for example, I cannot access the site and the browser times out. The wifi link works through my notebook though, so I know the problem does not lie with the router.

Anyone got ideas of whether my phone is faulty or whether there are some settings on the phone I need to set?

you can use any of the Nordic or danish ones that have ben made availabe, you first need to upgrade the phone to GDUxxx rom with also adds voice assist to WM5 you can leave it at this as it is an improvement over the SA rom we have, basically the standard one without any extras...there after change your phone to danish or Netherlands, will reboot and reconfigure, then you can flash it to WM6...

i'm not going into the details 'cause there is tons of info on the web on how to do this...there is NO difference between the roms except the default configuration languages and network operator they default to, once the upgrade is done, you can revert to English, it will reconfigure itself +-5min and then call samsung to send you the GPRS and MMS settings over the air...all done and it's worth the update...you can also find a rougue file floating a round the new that will install ppt. excel and word for WM6 because the samsung version is the standard version of WM6 which doesn't include office...

enjoy:D

I have just upgraded my Samsung SGH-i600 to Windows Mobile 6; below are the instructions as modified from http://www.modaco.com/content-page/253760/Samsung-SGH-i600-Firmware-Updates-here/page/280/ forums to suit South Africa Vodacom.
Disclaimer, just because it worked for me does not mean it will work for you, also, by upgrading this way it is mentioned that you void the warantee. YOU MAY BRICK YOUR PHONE IF YOU DO NOT DO THIS CORRECTLY.

1. Prior to starting ensure the following:
- Update won't work in Windows Vista (boot loader can't find files)
- Phone must be charged to full (3 bars)
- Eject the miniSD card.
- Write down the serial number of the phone below the battery.
- Don't unplug phone while upgrading
- Don't try to upgrade i607 with i600 roms

2. Install pre-requisites
- Samsung modem driver http://fus.samsungmobile.com/i600/Samsung_..._modem_4.34.zip
- ActiveSync 4.5 http://fus.samsungmobile.com/i600/ActiveSy...glish_setup.msi

3. Upgrade the "South African" i600 to the "European" XXGD1 version
- Download XXGD1 update, unpack file i600XXGD1_REV15.exe
- Connect the usb cable to the PC, ActiveSync must the find device
- Go to File>Connection Settings and disable "Usb connection"
- Turn off the device via power button
- Turn on the device in boot mode by pressing the RIGHT SOFT KEY, the CAMERA/BACK button and the POWER button at the same time.
- Run i600XXGD1_REV15.exe and press start button to start upgrading
- Wait for software installation to complete.
- A sequence of numbers should appear. The original instructions called to wait for 5 minutes until they disappear. I waited for 10 minutes, after which they still were cycling and I decided to reboot the phone, after which it worked correctly.

4. Download "European" WM6
- Go to: http://www.samsungmobile.com/promotion/i600/index.jsp
- Choose United Kingdom
- Type the version number: i600XXGD1
- Fill in the registry form, with your phone serial number S/N (capital letters).

5. Change phone version to UK Vodafone
- Type on phone *#1546792*#
- Choose option "Preconfiguration"
- Type password: *#81230*#
- Select country: United Kingdom
- Select operator: Vodafone Post pay
- Reset the phone

6. Upgrade the phone from WM5 to WM6 European.
- Extract and run i600UXXupdater.exe
- Select English language
- Enable USB connection under ActiveSync (File>Connections)
- Connect the i600 to the PC via USB
- Select all checkboxes on the updater and click "Verify device". If You get message "Incorrect software version", you may have to play around with the operator settings in 4.
- After that you should se windows with information "Device id verified"
- Press the buttons as indicated on the phone display: "left menu" + "camera key"
- Phone will restart and should run in boot mode. If not, then turn off, and hold "power" + "right soft key" + "camera key / back key" to run boot mode
- You should see updating on phone screen
- After this is complete, wait (about 5 min) to load phone, and automatic preconfiguration.

7. After reinstall
- Check that the version is: i600uxxgg2
- Choose South African locale under settings.

8. Vodacom settings.
- Go to Settings>Connections on the phone and delete all the Vodafone settings.
- Create a new GPRS connection with the following settings:
-- Description: Vodacom Internet
-- Connects to: Internet
-- Access point: internet
- Go to Internet Explorer>Tools>Options>Connections, select network "The Internet"
- Go to Messaging>SMS and MMS>Menu>MMS Options>MMS Profiles>Menu>New. Add the following settings:
-- Profile name: Vodacom MMS
-- MMSC URL: http://mmsc.vodacom4me.co.za
-- Tick Proxy
-- Address 196.6.128.6
-- Port 9201
- Go to Menu>Advanced settings. Do settings:
-- APN: mms.vodacom.net

Your phone should be working now and set up to use Vodacom's Internet and MMS.

The various troubleshooting has been discussed in length at the modaco.com forums in the link above.

I cant get my update process past Step 3 as there is no start option after I have launched the update program. There is a verify device button which is greyd out as it cant connect my device to the pc. Im suspecting that I have a different update version. It doesnt have the rev15.exe at the end. Do you think that this is the problem?

Ok, I got it to work. Great Stuff! This is a brilliant phone.

Great!

Yes, the version is important. You'll see a lot of the "older" instructions telling you to also change the version to the Nertherlands one... that was before they had the UK version.

The next step is to go to www.ytpocket.com for YouTube ...

BTW: Some additional "nice to have" setups:
- zaTelnet for ssh / Telnet (www.zatelnet.com) .
- SmartVNC for VNC (http://www.centacto.com/smartvnc.php)
- TCPMP for YouTube (look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Core_Pocket_Media_Player )
- Google maps mobile http://www.google.com/gmm/
- IBM MIDP emulator for Java and MXIT (http://mxit.defza.com/2007/mxit-or-java-on-samsung-blackjack-i600-or-windows-mobile/ )

- WM6 remote desktop http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/ppc-6700-xv6700/84897-wm6_rdp-mobile-remote-desktop-client.html
- Yahoo Go! http://go.yahoo.com/
- Office Mobile 6 (haven't got this working yet.. hacked version - on various threads. Any new leads?).
- HTC streaming cab (have to search for this..)

Handy Internet Explorer mobile Favourites:
- Classifieds: http://classifieds.iol.co.za/
- Facebook http://m.facebook.com/
- Google reader http://www.google.com/reader/m/view/
- Traffic http://www.trafficconnect.co.za/big_xml.html

- Weather http://xhtml.weather.com/
- Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Search?search=&fulltext=Search

If you find any other nice software & sites, tried it out and it works, post it here?

Eish, this sounds very strange. AFAIK the phones are not locked to a specific network. Can't make calls at all? What does the phone say when you try to make calls?

Hmm...
I think that you missed a step as mentioned.

For a possible alternative, there is also a resource at:
http://wiki.modaco.com/index.php/Samsung_i600

I have not tried this (READ "UNTESTED"), but it seems that there is an alternative firmware available at http://rapidshare.com/files/48573105/i600_WM6_XXGG2.rar , according to the MoDaCo wiki.

I have not seen any posts to vouch for this "alternate" firmware; but it does seem that MoDaCo is at least a bit reputable, so it *might* work.

Hi All,

Has anybody got this working on MTN?

BTW, I phoned Samsung the other day to ask when the official SA upgrade will be available. I got one answer saying 'this year' and another saying next week, but I'll have to book my phone in with my SP to get it done. Why do we get the upgrade later than the rest of the world? and why do Samsung SA treat us like idiots and insist we book the phone in rather than making it available as a download? Haven't Samsung ever tried booking something in with MTN SP - you have to book a days leave to wait in the queue!!!

OK, got brave and tried it. Then couldn't connect to MTN. Eventually discovered it didn't like my 3G SIM card. Swapped it for a 32K SIM card and all is working fine (including 3G)

Ok one thing, my MIC stopped working and YES I have WM6 on, the self help version. I phoned them today and they can fix my phone and upgrade it to the South African WM6 version. Now the warrenty fails if you had the WM6 "do it yourself" on. Will they reload WM6 for me and well fix my phone. Any ideas, since I can't seem to roll back to WM5.
